Park Cities Santa House Would Make Clark Griswold Proud
Written by Martha Jackson
University Park has one of the most visited Christmas destinations in Dallas and it would even make Clark Griswold proud!
For over 8 years, Wayne Smith has delighted visitors from all over with his magical collection of antique plastic blow molds in his front yard. Wayne has a huge passion for collecting and scourers the internet for new additions all year long. After years of collecting, he has amassed hundreds of pieces that adorn his yard each Christmas.
Located at the 3600 block of Southwestern Blvd., he shares his extensive collection of Santa’s, Three Stooges, Count Dracula, Kip’s Big Boy and even a Speelunker from the infamous Speelunker’s Cave from Six Flags.
If you’re in my age range visiting his home will instill a sense of nostalgia as you recall visiting the Speelunker’s cave and Big Boy from your childhood. For those of you who may not know about the cave, it was the only place to cool down during the hot Texas summer while visiting Six Flags. It was iconic
He also owns the head of the original Big Tex that was previously a Santa Claus in Kerens, TX. The State Fair of Texas purchased the head in 1947 and it was later converted into the original Big Tex in 1950. After serving as Big Tex for 5-6 years, Smith purchased the head at an auction in 1992.
Although the attraction causes a traffic jam each night during the holidays, the neighbors seem to take it in stride. Neighbor, Mary Stewart said, “When you see those first few Santas hit Wayne’s lawn around Thanksgiving, you realize it’s that time. The transformation has begun! Let’s be honest, the traffic is no picnic — but seeing families marvel at this neighborhood gem makes up for any inconvenience. Christmas spirit to the max, just a short stroll away!”
I visiting with Wayne at his home right before Christmas and had the pleasure of hearing the story behind what it takes to out-do Clark Griswold each year! The address is, 3629 Southwestern Blvd in University Park and it comes down next week.
